Kids Kite Building

For many years Lehigh Valley Kite Society (LVKS) has been building kites with different groups like Boy and Girl Scouts, Boy and Girl Clubs, Church Groups, Schools and Libraries to name a few. Tony Reiser has kept on top of the process of scheduling the kitebuilds and making sure they run smoothly. LVKS has made up to 2,000 kites in a year, for a total of over 15,000 kites over the years. Sometimes 100 kites at a time, but mostly in groups of 20-40 kites.

June 2002 The kite that is made by the participant is a "Ram Air Sled" kite. No sticks are used, a pocket fills with air, this gives the kite its shape to fly . All the supplies needed to make the kite are supplied by LVKS. The material is tyvek (a very strong paper). There are three panels that get taped together forming the kite.

The participant then uses a permanent markers to decorate the front. Then a bridle is attached, a fly line and the kite is ready to fly. The kite flies very good in any wind, if the wind is light you may need a little kid power to get it off the ground, if the wind is strong a tail may be needed to keep it aloft.

LVKS would like to bring Kite Building and/or a kite Show and Tell to your group's event. We'll set up our banners and award-winning kite display and tell you all about how the kites are constructed and the materials used. The presentation can include an explanation of how some kites are built and some of the many different kinds of kites there are.

If you would like to schedule either type of event,
please contact Andy Gelinas at E-mail.
